Classic & Sports Car Magazine recently hailed this "Iron fist in the velvet glove" as the second greatest sedan ever produced, bested only by the 1965 Jag MK II 3.8. But the Jag didn't boast 0-60 in 6.3 secs or stop from 70 mph in 166ft. Nor was it hand-built at the BMW Motorsport facility in Garching, near Munich and cost US$45,500 when new in 1988. Only 134 of these were sold in Canada between 87-90, of the total 1370 in NAmerica. This one is No. 748.

The M5 S38 (E28 US spec) was roughly based on the second generation of the 5-series. Capable of 241 km/h, It shares its 3.45 litre, 6cyl-256hp engine with the M635 CSi (M6) and the M1. It has Bosch Motronic fuel injection, an aluminum crossflow head, twin cams, 24 valves, machined intake and exhaust ports, a 9.8:1 compression ratio, an oilcooler, a Getrag five-speed gearbox, hydraulic levelling rear shock system, ABS, oversized 4-wheel vented disk brakes (11.8"front/11.2"rear) and 225-50 VR16,s on alloy rims. The engine is tight, it purrs and thrives upon 5w40 synthetic and 92 octane.

The M5 is considered one of the most understated "street legal" production cars ever made. This "wolf in sheep's clothing" has an exterior that is very discreet. Its the red, blue and purple M5 badges on the grille and the tail which shows that this not an ordinary BWM. Car and Driver tested the brake ability on the M5 and it stopped from 70 mph in only 166 feet. This ranks second by only two feet to the modern C/D record set by Corvette and Porsche 928 S4. The BMW Motosport factory in Germany built 1,235 M5s for the North American market. Each was assembled by hand, taking 75 engineers an entire week to build on the shop floor. It was originally planned that only 500 copies of their highest performance 5-series sedan would be imported to US shores and the advertising made mention of this fact in describing the car. When it later turned out that more than the original 500 cars were built for the US, several customers organized a class action lawsuit against BMW claiming false advertisement. The case was eventually settled with every US M5 purchaser given credit towards the purchase of a new BMW.

This vehicle offered for sale was purchased from its second owner of 9 years in January 1999. It is one of a handful that came to North America with black leather rather than tan. It has been garaged over its life, but downtown Toronto parking had put a lot of scratches in the paint and nothing had been done mechanically to the car since new in 1988. During the spring of 1999, $14,000 was spent bringing the car back to its original condition. This included new front and rear brake rotors, callipers and pads, coolant sensors, new clutch kit, front shocks, tie rod, center link, passenger leveller system replacement shock, new circuit board in dash, tires, cold-valve adjustment and shimming, antenna, fix power steering pump leak, trany seals, differential seals, oilpan gasket, cam seals, fog lamp, sunroof lid, power aerial, exterior-respray (black), re-dye interior leather (Woolies-black), and hide food treatment. All history is available.

This car is restored into excellent condition and shows beautifully. It's condition is helped by the most thorough corrosion treatment ever given to an automobile. At manufacture, all steel was been zinc-plated, the entire body was emersed in a phosphate bath, then a cathodic bath, and finally undercoating was applied for hollow cavity preservation. There is no rust on this car.

This M5 will be certified prior to purchase and guaranteed to pass a discriminating mechanical inspection. Serviced by MotorWerks in Newmarket and Downtown BMW in Toronto. Present mileage 174,000km. It is available for viewing in the Toronto area.
